What: The Berlin Wall was a wall that separated East and West Berlin to prevent people from leaving.
Where: The city of Berlin in Germany
When: The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 and was torn down 1989
Why: People in East Germany did not want to be ruled by the Soviet Union and Communism and began to leave East Germany. Soviet and East German leaders worried too many people were leaving East Germany, and as a result The Berlin Wall was built. When the wall was torn down, the Soviet Union was collapsing and people were able to move freely throughout Germany. Germany was reunified on on October 3, 1990.
