In Ecuador the capital city is Quito. They use US Dollars as their official currency. Over 15.2 million people live in the country of Ecuador. Ecuador's national language is Spanish, spoken by 94% of the population. Ecuador is bordered by the countries of Peru and Colombia.
Ecuador has a very diverse climate. Most of the land is tropical except for the mountains where it gets very cold. Achachay!
One of the most famous and most visited sites in Ecuador is the Galapagos Islands. People like to go scuba diving, snorkeling and even hike and see the wildlife of the Galapagos Islands.
Another place people like to visit in Ecuador is the Andes Mountains. These mountains stretch all the way down to Argentina. People go to these mountains to rock climb and to hike.
People also like to go to the largest rainforest in the world, covering almost a fourth of the continent of South America; the Amazon Rainforest. When people go to the Amazon rainforest they observe wildlife, bird watch, and go trekking.
People in Ecuador like to eat a huge variety. Some of their favorite things to eat are cuy (guinea pig),tamales, and enceballado (fish stew). Tengo unas ganas de jamar!
A holiday that the people in Ecuador celebrate is their independence day. They won their independence from Spain and started the country of Ecuador. They won the battle of Pichincha and defeated the last of the loyalist armies.Soon after they defeated the remaining Spanish. Some time after that they won back the provinces that make up modern day Ecuador.
