Screening and Detection methods

Examine your skin. Your doctor may look at your skin to determine whether your skin changes are likely to be skin cancer. Further testing may be needed to confirm that diagnosis. Remove a sample of suspicious skin for testing (skin biopsy). Your doctor may remove a small sample of suspicious-looking skin for laboratory testing.

Treatment

Your treatment options for skin cancer and the precancerous skin lesions known as actinic keratoses will vary, depending on the size, type, depth and location of the lesions. Small skin cancers limited to the surface of the skin may not require treatment beyond an initial skin biopsy that removes the entire growth.

Prevention

Skin cancer and sun damage occur most often on the left side of the face and body. That’s because UV rays penetrate through car windows, hitting you while you’re driving. Tint your car windows to protect yourself behind the wheel.

Famous people who have it

Anderson Cooper

While following President Barack Obama on the campaign trail in 2008, Cooper announced on his CNN.com blog that he underwent surgery to have a ”small spot of skin cancer” under his left eye removed.

Survival/Fatality rate

The number of new cases of melanoma of the skin was 213 per 100,000 men and women per year. The number of deaths was 27 per 100,000 men and women per year. These rates are age-adjusted and based on 2007-2011 cases and deaths.

prognosis of skin cancer

The 5-year and 10-year survival rates refer to the percentage of patients who live at least this long after their cancer is diagnosed. Of course, many people live much longer than 5 or 10 years and many are cured.

To get 5- and 10-year survival rates, doctors have to look at people who were treated at least 5 or 10 years ago. Improvements in treatment since then may result in a better outlook for people being diagnosed with melanoma now.
