Whitewater Rafting

Introduction

In this Tackk, I will be taking about the activity I chose in The Canadian shield. The activity chosen is Whitewater Rafting in the area of Ottawa Valleys. This is a perfect place because of the weather, lakes and many others which I also will be explaining in this Tackk. You will also learn about the precipitation, rocks and glaciation, and overall how it was formed to fit perfectly in with rafting.

Climate

Ottawa Valleys, where the activity is being placed, has moderate weather in some months. From June to Augest the climate is from 15 degrees to 18 degrees. These months are the best for this activity because it is reasonably warm, not too cold, and not too hot. From these 3 months, the Ottawa Valleys, have 100 to 120 mm of precipitation. This is very good for rafting because it created rapids, and when the dams get full of water, it realeses more water to have a much more enjoyable time. The southern Canadian shield has long and warm summers, to make sure that people will have enough time to enjoy this activity, and because of the high lattitude in the Ottawa Valleys, it makes it a cooler and more relaxing place to enjoy your time.

Landscape

The Canadian shield was formed by a covergent boundary 2.5 billion years ago. It consists of many rocks and small rocky hills due to the evere glaciation during the ice age, which covered the Shield and scraped the rock clean. The Ottawa Valleys have many lakes and rivers, making whitewater rafting a perfect activity for this place. The beautiful rocky hills surrounding the lakes and rivers, makes this place a good place to feel adventurious and dangerious rafting in these tight areas.

Rocks and Soil

The Canadian shield has 2 main types of rocks which are igneous and metamorphic. As magma rose toward the surface, it intruded into cracks of the Shield rock and after it colled, the igneous rock formed. This rock is considered the ingrediant for all rocks.The second metamorphic rocks are formed at convergent boundaries when collision occured between the igneous rocks. With this pressure, and heat, the Canadian Shield formed its second most popular rock type. These rocks are found also in the southen Canadian shield, and will be there during this activity. Southern Canadian Shield have a very dense soil that is not suitable for forestation, but it also contains many marshes and bogs. The rest of the region has coarse soil that does not retain moisture well and is frozen as permafrost year round. This is very good for my activty because although it may not have the best soil for agriculture, the water will not freeze, thus leading to a while to wait until the water de-frosts.

As shown above, the shaded parts of the may is the Canadian shield. The southern part where Ottawa is, is where my activity is being placed. As shown below, that is a video of whitewater rafting, and as you can tell, it looks very exciting and fun.
