Vladimir Putin


Born October 7, 1952 in Leningrad, now call St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin had a fairly normal childhood. In the late 1970's he started to work for the government after joining the KGB, the CIA equivalent in the Soviet Union. From 1985-1990 Putin worked in East Germany, where he was promoted twice. He was president from May 7, 2000- May 7, 2008. He was reelected in May 7, 2012 and is still president. He has two daughters that, according to his ex-wife, "He has always spoiled them, while I was the one who had to discipline them."

Rise to Power

He became the Deputy Chairman of the St. Petersburg government in 1994 and resigned from the KGB. In 1999 Putin become the Prime Minister of the Russian Government, offered by the president at that time Boris Yeltsin. In December 1999, Boris Yeltsin proposed that Putin become acting president, as he was stepping down. On December 31, 1999 Vladimir Putin become acting president of Russia. He was reelected in 2004 before becoming the Prime Minister again. On March 4, 2012 he become the President of Russia.

Style of Government

In his inauguration of his second term as acting president he said "...We want a mature democracy and a developed civil society. We want to strengthen Russia’s place in the world. But our main goal, is to bring about a noticeable rise in our people’s prosperity."

Domestic Priorities

Putin wants to make Russia more modernized and he supports the development of an agriculture center in Russia. Putin, as Prime Minister, said " The authorities draw their support solely from the Russian People."

In his inauguration speech he said "I consider it to be my sacred duty to unify the people of Russia, to rally citizens around clear aims and tasks, and to remember every day and every minute that we have one Motherland, one people and one future." On February 2, 2012 Vladimir Putin said that Russia is "part of the greater world whether we are talking about economy, the spread of information, or development of culture".

Foreign Policies

In 2012 Vladimir Putin released a large statement that discussed is views on the relationship between Russia and the World. He believed that countries should be more active in the observation of human rights in other countries and that, with enough effort, they will be able to solve humanitarian problems , promote democratic principles, and human rights. Something that Putin was against was how people still fear and criticize Russia. He wants Russian culture to makes its way into the international market and change their view on Russia.

Current Event

Vladimir Putin is being criticized for sending troop into Crimea to "takeover", however there has been no reported injuries to anyone. The Russian troops have been acting civil to the Crimean people and troops. Putin also ordered 150,000 Russian troops who were on the border of Ukraine back to their barracks to try and ease tensions along the border. In March the people of Crimea voted on whether Crimea should be re-established as property of Russia. The people voted that Crimea should re-join Russia and, as of March 18, 2014, Crimea is now officially part of Russia. In the picture shown below, a woman and her daughter are walking past a Russian tank and they are perfectly calm and not fearful.


Vladimir Putin is known for being there for the people after a disaster happened. In 2010, when Putin was prime minister, there were multiple wildfires in Russia and Putin took the reconstruction of homes and compensation under his personal control. A total of 2,200 families received new homes to replace the ones they had lost.
