The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense.  Construction was started on the Pentagon on September 11, 1941. On September 11, 2001 (exactly 60 years after the groundbreaking of the Pentagon), American Airlines Flight 77 was highjacked and flown into the western side of the building.  The Pentagon's pentagon-shaped plaza in the middle of it is nicknamed "Ground Zero."

Fun Facts:

It would cost $50,527,320.00 to cover the Pentagon in silk (not including the bottom or the courtyard), when one square foot of silk costs $30.00.

It would take about 14 American women (averaging a height of 5'4") to reach the height of the Pentagon building.
