The Beatles

They are one of the most well known bands in the world; they have many top hits such as I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Love Me Do. They are, you guessed it, The Beatles. As one of the most iconic and influential bands of the century The Beatles are truly musical legends.

The Beatles were formed in 1960 in Liverpool, England when John Lennon asked Paul McCartney to join his amateur band, The Quarrymen. Later that year McCartney convinced Lennon to let George Harrison join the band. They went from being The Quarrymen to the Johnny and the Moondogs. After that Stu Sutcliffe joined the band as their bassist. Soon after that they were joined by Pete Best, the new drummer in the band. The Beatles or Johnny and the Moondogs started out playing a small club called The Cabash. After undergoing a few more name changes, such as, The Silver Beetles, The Silver Beatles and finally The Beatles, combining beat with beetle.  In 1960 the band toured in Hamburg, Germany. Playing in rowdy and small clubs with a demanding audience was tough work but The Beatles could pull it off. When the boys returned to Liverpool, a record store owner, Brian Epstein, got wind of The Beatles and was so interested decided to go see them himself.  Brian Epstein fell in love with the sound and their energy and from that moment on he decided he wanted to manage the band. He tried getting the boys multiple auditions but failed, they finally got a solid audition with George Martin of Parlophone Records. Martin fell in love with the music just like Epstein and immediately signed them. He loved the whole group, except for the drummer, Pete Best had to go. The band admitted later to being too scared and cowardly to fire Pete Best and left the job up to Epstein. Pete Best was later replaced by Ringo Starr and The Beatles were complete!

The first music The Beatles released was their singles, Love me do/ P.S I Love You. These were recorded in September, 1962 and were written by Lennon and McCartney, this was unheard of in that time of rock n roll. Most bands only played cover songs. Love me do/ P.S I Love You barely made the British top 20. Their real fame came when they released Please Please Me, their first album, in early 1963. It topped the charts for 30 weeks making them the biggest rock act in Britain.  The first song released in America was I Want to Hold Your Hand; it also was a huge success. The song went straight to number one shortly after the release in December, 1963. By the time they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in February, 1964, they were already dominating the charts, they held the number one and two spots on the top 100. Several other Beatles records were scattered around the charts. During the week of April 4, 1964, The Beatles broke record that no band could ever beat or have beaten before. The Beatles held the top 5 spots on the top 20. From 1962 until 1970, The Beatles had over 40 number one hit songs worldwide.  In addition, they had 12 albums that reached number one on the American pop charts.  Despite breaking up in 1970, the band continues to sell albums and remains one of the most popular recording acts of all time.

The band broke up on April 10th, 1970. It was a huge tragedy and the world was devastated. Their break up was caused by a number of things, such as the death of their manager Brian Epstein, financial and legal problems, and all the members started working on private projects causing the band to grow apart. Most people say Yoko Ono, Lennon’s wife/ girlfriend got between him and his band mates which is partly why the break up happened but it was only a part of the many factors that caused the band to grow apart.

The band consists of four members; John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.  Lennon and McCartney were the most popular members of the band and are credited with writing a majority of the Beatles songs over the years.  John Lennon was born October 9th, 1940 in Liverpool, England and died in 1980. He was killed in New York City by Mark Chapman.  George Harrison was born February 25th, 1943 in Liverpool, England and died in 2001 in Los Angeles of lung cancer.  Ringo Starr was born in July 7th, 1940 in Liverpool, England and is still alive today. Paul McCartney is still  alive as well. He was born June 18th, 1942 in Liverpool. Paul McCartney continues to play live shows and is active in raising money for various charities throughout the world.

The Beatles are loved all around the world, everyone knows and remembers The Beatles and their songs. They are a huge part of music history and will be forever.
