Augusto Pinochet

1) About Augusto

Augusto Pinochet was born on November 25, 1915 in Valparaiso, Chile. He took the position of the commander-in-chief of the Chilean Army from 1973-1998. Also coming into play in 1973, is when he took office as the dictator of the country. His reign was much like others we have seen. He was criminally charged with many acts of brutality. He was found responsible of killing an unconfirmed number of somewhere between 1,200 and 3,200 people. He is also credited with the ruthless torture of over 80,000 people.

2) Chilean protestors stand  strong against movie glorifying Pinochet

In this piece, you see that these Chilean protestors are seen causing near riots due to a film being produced about Pinochet's life. In said film, he is going to be seen as a historic hero. This is the reason why they are protesting. They believe that their history as a country should not be glorified in such a light. They strongly believe that Pinochet was guilty of the pain and suffering of their ancestors and the fact that he is to be seen as a hero disgusts them. This video is very powerful in the sense that these people not only say they have strong feelings about this leader, but, they act upon those feelings as well. This shows just how much of an impact that Pinochet has made on their history and current life.

3) To Salvage a Nation

We don’t forget

The things that you have done

Our past in ruins

From your ruthless doings

That were no definition of fun

Though you caused much suffering

From which we still are not prospering

For you it came no cost

We rebuilt our nation

To give gratification

To those that we have lost

4) Essential Question

What kind of impact has Augosto Pinochet left (past and present) on Chile as a nation?
