Major Functions of the Endocrine System

The Endocrine System is a collection of glands that produce hormones and regulate metabolism, growth, and development. They also regulate reproduction, sleep, mood, and other things.

Major Organs of the Endocrine System

The major organs that are part of the Endocrine System are Hypothalamus, Pituitary Gland, Thyroid Gland, Parathyroid Glands, Adrenal Glands, Pancreas, Gonads, Thymus, Kidney, Ovary, Uterus, Teste, and Placenta.

Major diseases of the Endocrine System

Diseases that the Endocrine System can get include Diabetes. Diabetes occurs when the Pancreas does not produce enough insulin, that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood stream. Another illness is Pituitary tumors, the most common causes of the Pituitary gland disorders are pituitary gland tumors. Pituitary gland tumors are not a form of cancer and are not brain tumors.

Interesting Facts of the Endocrine System

In 1923, two scientists named Fredrick Banting and John Macleod, won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, known as insulin. There are nearly 30 different hormones produced in your body. Hormones made in the Hypothalamus gland control feelings of how hungry you are and how thirsty you are. The hormone the Thyroid gland produces controls how much energy and stamina you have throughout the day. The pineal gland produces a hormone responsible for regulating how much you sleep, it is called Melatonin. If not enough growth hormones are released from the pituitary gland during childhood you will be really short when you grow up.

Things that affect the Endocrine System

Things that can cause the Endocrine System to not function properly include aging, Conditions, Stress, and Environmental Factors. Aging sometimes slows how quickly hormones break down and leave the body. Conditions can result in cancerous and non-cancerous tumors. Stress can cause allergic reactions and diseases. Environmental Factors can cause birth defects and reduced ability to handle stress.
