BIOGRAPHY

EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE

(BORN APRIL 9, 1830, KINGSTON UPON THAMES, ENGLAND.—DIED MAY 8, 1904, KINGSTON UPON THAMES). HE WAS A FILMMAKER, PHOTOGRAPHER,  AND BRITHISH INVENTOR.

HE EMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1851. HIS EXPERIMENTS ON THE CHRONOPHOTOGRAPHY SERVED AS THE BASIS FOR THE LATER INVENTION OF THE CINEMATOGRAPH.

MUYBRIDGE'S REPUTATION GREW AS A PHOTOGRAPHER WITH I IMAGES OF YOSEMITE PARK AND THE CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO.

MUYBRIDGE BEGAN EXPERIMENTING WITH AN 12 CAMERAS PHOTOGRAPHING A GALLOPING HORSE IN A SEQUENCE OF SHOTS.

BETWEEN 1878 AND 1884, MUYBRIDGE PERFECTED HIS METHOD OF HORSES IN MOTION, PROVING THAT THEY DO HAVE ALL FOUR HOOVES OFF THE GROUND DURING THEIR RUNNING STRIDE.

THE HUMAN EYE CANNOT SEE IT, BUT DURING A MOMENT A GALLOPING HORSE DOES NOT SUPPORT ANY HOOVE ON THE GROUND.

THE KISS, WAS PRODUCED SOME TIME BETWEEN 1872 AND 1885, SIGNIFICANTLY BEFORE THE INVENTION OF THE MOTION PICTURE CAMERA. IT WAS CREATED USING BANKS OF STILL CAMERAS FIRING IN SEQUENCE. ESSENTIALLY EVERY ONE OF MUYBRIDGE’S PLATES IS A FILM FIRST.

THE ZOOPRAXISCOPE IS AN ARTIFACT THAT WAS IMPORTANT IN THE INITIAL DEVELOPMENT OF FILMS, BEING PRIOR TO THE CINEMATOGRAPH. CREATED BY EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE IN 1879, PROJECTED IMAGES LOCATED IN ROTATING DISKS OF GLASS IN A RAPID SUCCESSION TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION OF MOVEMENT.  

EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE'S PHOTOGRAPHY OF MOVING ANIMALS CAPTURED MOVEMENT IN A WAY THAT HAD NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. HIS WORK WAS USED BY BOTH SCIENTISTS AND ARTISTS.

THE AMERICAN INVENTOR THOMAS EDISON, WATCHED THE WORK OF MUYBRIDGE WITH GREAT INTEREST.
