The earlier you find yourself a mentor, the better. After all, the time when you need to focus on learning more than anything else is in the initial years of your career.

Every individual strives to achieve all his professional goals and it is important to realize that it is not easy to get to the top without learning from an expert in your field. However, not every expert has what it takes to be your guide, advisor and teacher.

An ideal mentor is one who has relevant knowledge and is willing to impart it too. Additionally he/she should have the ability to get down to your level and coach you from scratch. When it comes to learning from a teacher, a lot of the work that has to be done is your own responsibility. However, a teacher should be able to push you in the right direction and help you overcome the problems that you face.

The most important quality in a mentor is that he should be goal oriented. He should know what he wants from his own life. If he doesn’t know where he is headed himself, how could he possibly guide you?

Finding such a mentor is not easy. Especially nowadays, as almost every individual is focused on their own growth and looks at every newcomer in the field/organization as possible competition. So if you are able to find yourself a good mentor then give him genuine respect, cheer him on as he excels in his career and always be willing to return the favor by supporting him through his difficult times.
