Fasting Growing Plant
The world record for the fastest growing plant belongs to certain species of bamboo, which have been found to grow at up to 91 centimeters (35 inches) per day.
How tall can it grow in a week in centimeters?
How tall can it grow in a week in inches?
How many days would it take for the bamboo to be taller than you?
How many days would it take for the bamboo to be taller than your teacher?
Cabbage and Rabbits
During the Alaska State Fair's 17th Annual Giant Cabbage Weigh-Off, a behemoth cabbage grown by Scott Robb of Palmer came in at 138.25 pounds ( more than 10 pounds heavier than the previous record-holder), setting the new world record for the heaviest cabbage.
Rabbits need a good healthy balanced diet. A good guideline is to feed the rabbit a minimum of 1 cup of vegetables for each 4 lbs of body weight per day. Cabbage can give rabbits digestive troubles, so it should be limited.
2 pounds of cabbage is equal to about 10 cups of shredded cabbage.
Knowing all this, how long would it take a rabbit to each this entire head of cabbage? How would it change if the rabbit was lighter or heavier?
It takes some time for baby birds to hatch. It takes time for baby birds to fly and leave the nest. But how long does it take?
Each species of bird takes a different amount of time to hatch and to fly. The following link shows these times. Choose some of your favorite birds and graph the information given. How do each of the birds differ? Are any of them the same?
You can also watch different types of birds on these live web cams. Some of them are in northern states, so there are fewer birds. Any predictions? Think about migration and maybe you will get some ideas.
Countdown to Spring
Have you ever wondered how many days until Spring? Here is a website that can not only give you how many days, but hours, minutes and seconds! You can countdown to Spring, Summer, Mother's Day, 2016, Earth Day, the release of a movie, Christmas or set up your own countdown!
Fraction of the Moon Illuminated
The following is a chart from the United States Naval Observatory. It shows the fraction of the moon that is illuminated at midnight, every day of the year.
Graph the following information.
What dates do you think there will be a new or full moon?
How many full moons will there be this year?
How many new moons will there be this year?
How long does it take from one new moon to the next?
What will the moon look like on your birthday?
