"Digital Citizenship Parent Guide"

9 Digital Elements

Digital Literacy

My Definition: The process of being able to learn and teach about technology as well as using technology.

I. One thing I think parents should teach their children is, basic computer terms that are used when talking about a computer, such as the parts of the computer and the system and what each thing does. ( what to do or what not to do)

II. A second thing I think parents should teach their children is different websites they can use to research, such as Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Blekko and Wolfram, and what they are good for.

III. A third thing I believe would be helpful for a parent to teach their children is how technology may be helpful to them, but first I believe a parent should know their child/children to know how to help them, such in a case if the child had a special need and their communication skills were not very well used, such as verbal communication. Getting them an iPad to make their communication more helpful with the people around them, with applications that are available for their use.

IV. I believe another important thing for a parent to teach their child is how to research something but then being able to make it their own, such as rephrasing/ paraphrasing, so their isn't consequences for both the parents and or the child.

All the tips should be taught around a certain age group where they are able to comprehend and take things into consideration.

Digital Access

My Definition ring aware of new d used technology and being part of it.

I. One thing I believe parents should teach their children is how to work/use the Internet, such as what kind of adds are save to click on or what kind of websites are safe.

II. A second thing I thing parents should teach their children is how to be able to use the Internet but for the right resons, giving them a certain amount of time to use the Internet or giving them a Internet schedule, certain amount of time to spend on doing homework or certain amount of time to socialize.

III. A third thing I think is important for parents to teach their children is how the Internet has made a difference for many people, if they were born into the technology usage and grew up with it and how people who didn't/ don't have it and don't dont use it live today and how it may have an impact on them. ( digital native and digital divied)

IV. A fourth thing I think is also important for parents to teach their children is the difference of where they live (locally) and how where others live ousted of there area ( internationally) may have acces to the Internet or how they may not have acces to the Internet.

Digital Health & Wellness

My Definition: How one can be physically and mentally well with the usage of both the Internet and technology usage in general.

I. One important thing for parents to teach about health and wellness is the way their children should use proper posture while using a computer. They should let them know the positive and negative outcomes if they don't use correct posture.

II. A second important for parents to teach their children time limits for their computer usage time a day. If they have homework they should give them a time limit, unless more time needed is required. This would be helpful for both the parents and child, it would be helpful so the child doesn't become addicted to the Internet and would feel the need to be on the computer all day and it would be helpful to the parents so they don't have to always watch their child.

III. A third thing that would be important for parents to teach their child is the importance to exercise and go outside. It is important to exerciser to stay fit and be physically healthy for a person, especially as a child being able to run around.

IV. A fourth thing that I think is important for a parent to teach their children is how to be able to spend time and communicate with people in person then just over online, I believe this is another way to be emotionally healthy to be able to keep relationships.

Digital Rights and Responsibilities

My Definition: Being able to use work freely in the digital world.

I. First one important thing for a parent to teach their child the symbols of copyright, so they are aware of what they look like and what they mean.

II. A parent should also teach their child what they are and aren't able to do with someone else's property. They are able to paraphrase but not copy and paste word for word because that will be a problem. And also teach them about what they are and aren't allowed to use the item for.

Digital Commerce

My Definition: Safley Selling and Purchasing online.

I. One important thing for parents to teach their children is how to keep their personal information private, by not putting it on public sites, even if they are private they are still able to be seen somehow. One way is by making sure the website is secured with the https// at the beginning of a website as well with the lock which is also meant for security.

II. Another thing that is important for parents to teach their children is how to make sure of what they are purchasing is what they are looking for. Look at what the people who have already purchased the item has said about the item and how it works and if it is what they were looking for. Usually what the people are trying to sell you the items have great things to say about the product because they know they will get your attention.

III. A third thing that should also be taught to their children is if what they are purchasing has a guarantee on it, such as a return policy and how much will it be for the shipping and handling as well as the return who will have to pay and is it worth returning the item back to the company.

IV. Another important thing for parents to teach their child is if what they are purchasing is worth what they are paying for, both quality and quantity are important.

Digital Etiquette

My Definition: Being able to communicate with others in a correct form.

I. Parents should teach their children how to be able to have a conversation with another person face to face and be comfortable with it as well as over text message.

II. Parents should teach their children and make them aware of the consequences for being inappropriate online.
