The 52 Albums that define my love for music
Week 9 / Album 9
Who: Duran Duran "Rio"
When: Early 80's
Why: Its no secret that I love 80's pop music. This record could have been any number of random 80's pop stars. This one stuck out because my mother pounded it into my brain in between her random Bowie breaks. There is not much beyond why I like this other than the fact that I just love 80's pop. (My mom also drove Journey into my head as well, but I just cant get behind them anymore...Thanks Glee)
Where: I've never seen Duran Duran and probably won't ever see Duran Duran. Some bands I just don't need to see because you know they arent pulling these songs off well anymore.
You know you like this one:
Besides Journey, when you think of 80s pop, Duran Duran is right there at the top. They are/were everything that the 80's pop stood for. Big hair, makeup, pastel suits, catchy hooks, SYNTH, and the unforgettable Saxophone solos. In my opinion, in my lifetime there has not been a better era of pop music. 90's pop is the absolute worst. 00's pop is mostly annoying, and '10's pop is just stupid.
Maybe its because I lived through it that makes me appreciate it more. But come on, tell me songs like "Rio" and other bands like A-Ha, Hall and Oates, Men at Work, Billy Joel, Lionel Richie, Billy Ocean, Wham!, Huey Lewis and so many others come on the radio and usually put you in a good mood.
The funny thing about 80s pop, is that bands these days are ripping them off left and right. Most of the pop "indie" music that everyone keeps falling in love with is basically 80's songs revisited.
I love my 80's pop music. Always will.
