Cotton is the soft , white downy fiber attached to the seed of a cotton plant. Cotton is a natural fiber used to produce textiles. It grows in a ball around the seed of cotton plant and the fiber is spun into a yarn or a thread. Common uses for cotton are underwear, socks , shirts , blouses , jeans , towels , sheets. Cotton fiber is immersed into 18- 25% solution of sodium hydroxide. Cotton fiber is amazingly versatile, whether alone or blended, it outsells all other fibers combined. Cotton absorbs up to 27 times its own weight in water.

Some characteristics are:

• Has a comfortable, soft hand

• Is easy to launder

• Takes dye easily, good colorretention

• Is durable and strong

• Conducts heat well

• Resists abrasion•

Resists pilling and moths•

Haslittle resiliency; prone to wrinkling

• Weakensfrom extended exposure tosunlight

• Is easy to handle and sew

Flax (linen)

This fiber comes from a stem of a flax plant. Flax fibers are amongst the oldest fiber crops in the world. Linen is also used extensively by artisan bakers. Flax is also grown as an ornamental plant in gardens. Common uses are pants, blazers , table linens , and upholstery. Flax is used to make linen. Flax clothing is washed in the washing machine using warm water but it is usually preferred you hand-wash your flax clothing or better still if you give it to the dry cleaners. some characteristics are: linen does not cause allergic reactions and is helpful in treating a number of allergic disorders , and linen possesses high air permeability and heat conductivity properties.


Wool is the fiber that forms the coat (fleece) of sheep. Characteristics: natural insulator; warmest of all natural fibers . soft and resilient , naturally flame retardant , absorbs moisture more slowly. Wool common uses sweaters , tailored suits , coat , blankets , rug and carpet. Proper care and use is to dry clean or hand wash in cool water and a mild detergent.


silk is the fine , lustrous fiber that comes from a cocoon spun by a silkworm. Silk is a natural protein fibre, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. Some of silks characteristics are that the luxurious appear and and fell. It is also the strongest of all material fibers , It drapes nicely , It is also expensive. Silk easily spots if fabric becomes wet. It weakens exposures to sun and perspiration . Silks proper care is to dry clean or hand wash according to the garment directions. Common uses are wedding gowns , lingerie , and men's ties.
