Summary: Tikki Tikki Tembo is an ancient Chinese folktale about a Chinese family that has two sons named Tikki Tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo, the oldest and Chang being the youngest. Of the sons, the eldest will get the family fortune. Because Tikki Tikki Tembo is the oldest, he was given a very long and very impressive name. One day Chang falls in the river, and the family goes around trying to find a boat so that they can rescue him.“Chang has fallen into the river?” Father cried in alarm. “We must borrow our Neighbor’s boat and rescue him!” When they finally got the boat they rescued Chang, nearly drowned. A few weeks later, the two boys were getting water from the well, when Tikki Tikki Tembo leaned to far in and fell. His brother Chang ran to his father and told him they needed to rescue Tikki Tikki Tembo. Once again they went to their neighbor, but this time they asked for a ladder. Chang, his Mother and his Father ran to the neighbors house. “Tikki Tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo fallen into the well,” they told their neighbor. “We need to borrow your ladder!" When they finally rescued Tikki Tikki Tembo, he had drowned. He had drowned because his family had taken too long because they had to say his entire name when they went to their neighbor looking for a ladder. Ever since that day, the people of China have given their children very short names.
Many American children make fun of Chinese names. Someone could be mocking a Chinese child because of their 'weird' name. I fell like this story is telling you that you shouldn't judge someone because of their name or their family. You shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
Many people believe that the Chinese culture is weird. Just because it not just like our culture doesn't mean its weird. Don't judge someone because of their culture.
