Red Scare/ McCarthyism

McCarthyism was just like the Salem Witch trials in the sense that all you had to do was be accused and you would be punished. In this case, the "witches" were Communists. During this time, we were fighting the Soviet Union (also called reds) in the Cold War. So, people were in a panic about traitors and spies and allies to the Communists being among us, hence the name Red Scare. In their panic, people would accuse innocent people of being Communists or friends to Communists and the accused would not receive a fair trial, since Joseph McCarthy took charge of the whole trial cycle and made himself the judge, jury and executioner.
