This book tells the story of a teddy bear named Corduroy, displayed on a toy shelf in a department store. One day, a girl named Lisa arrives in the store with her mother and spots the bear. She is willing to buy him, but her mother declines to spend more money and notes that a button is missing from his overalls. The bear never knew that his button was missing and then the night after the little girl came, he went on a search throughout the mall to find his button. That night, when everything was shut and locked, he climbed down from his shelf and began searching for his lost button. While he was searching, he had accidentally stepped onto the escalator. He says "Could this be a mountain?" "I think I've always wanted to climb a mountain." Once he arrived to the top, he couldn't believe his eyes, he thought he had arrived at a palace. He said "This must be a palace!" "I guess I've always wanted to live in a palace." He began searching for his button. He had climbed up onto the bed and then he saw something. He said "Why, here's my button!" He struggled to get the button free from the mattress, when he finally pulled off the button, he fell off the mattress and into a lamp. The security guard immediately came rushing down the escalator and yelled "Now who in the world did that! Somebody must be hiding around here!" After all this happened, the security guard returned Corduroy to his original location. That same morning, Corduroy woke up to a warm surprise. The little girl, Lisa, from yesterday had returned to buy him. She refused to put him in a box and ran all the way back to her apartment. When they arrived at her apartment, she took him straight to her room. In her room, the text states, "There was a chair and a chest of drawers, and alongside a girl-size bed stood a little bed just the right size for him." This shows that the little girl really cares about him and she cares about him so much that she fixed his overalls by adding a button to his shoulder strap.
Friendship is an important role in this story. After the first time the girl and the bear met no one thought that they would meet again but in the story it states that "Corduroy watched them sadly as they walked away." In the picture on that page, the girl is looking back at the bear with a very sad look and some readers can infer that she may return sometime to get the bear but it does not clearly state that. The author then talks about how Corduroy is going to go find his button that night. This could be a sign that the girl is going to return soon to get him. Corduroy must be desperate to get bought because he is risking getting caught by the security guard just to find his button to make a girl happy. I think Corduroy's act of courage was worth it because he was not only going to find his button, but then he was able to experience something new. In the story when he is going up the escalator, he think he is climbing a mountain and when he is on the second floor looking at all the furniture, he thinks he is in a palace. After all this happens and when it has returned to morning, the little girl has returned to buy Corduroy. This was the best moment of Corduroy's life. It does not state this in the text but at the end of the story it states that "You must be a friend," said Corduroy. "I've always wanted a friend." This could mean that this was Corduroy's happiest memory and the best day of his life.
