This is an image of the railroad tracks leading to the unloading platforms at Birkenau.

Birkenau was the deadliest of the Nazi death camps in command by Rudolf Hoss, its purpose was to be the mass extermination facility of the Auschwitz Complex. When it was originally constructed, Himmler intended it to be a P.O.W camp capable of imprisoning 100,000 P.O.W's. As the war progressed it transformed to be the extermination facility of the Auschwitz camps, its provisional gas chambers were ready for operation in 1942. Construction also started for four gigantic gas chambers in mid 1942, these gas chambers had the capacity to exterminate 1.6 million people per year.

This video takes you on a tour of the gas chambers at Auschwitz which were very similar to the ones in Birkenau. The Birkenau gas chambers are all but destroyed, with only the ruins of the building left standing.
