Stanford / Civil Engineering

I chose Stanford University because it is the ideal college for me. They have one of the best engineering programs in the country and it is an outstanding school. Aside from being an Ivy league college, they have an exceptional athletic program. They are ranked top 10 in football, soccer, and basketball. They offer the two things that I want to do which is to become a civil engineer and soccer player.

According to the Stanford webpage, the school was founded in 1891 by Leland and Jane Stanford. They decided to build the school weeks after their 15 year old son passed away. Herbert Hoover was a pioneer graduate from Stanford. He then became president of the United States in 1928.  A group of alumni volunteers formed "Stanford Associates" to raise money for the school to ensure the development of the program.

Campus Life

Campus life in Stanford can be very exciting and will teach you something new every day. They offer many things such as athletics, clubs, religious organizations, student groups and many more things. 12,000 students live on campus and a popular form of transportation is traveling by bicycle. It is said that there are about 13,000 bicycles on campus. 96% of undergraduates live on campus and 62% of graduates live on campus. The university has a very exciting and surprising lifestyle.

My Career

Civil engineering caught my eye when I was about 10 years old. I have always enjoyed doing activities that require imagination and creativity, civil engineering requires a lot of that. I can't complain about the salary either. Stanford offers one of the best engineering programs in the country and it is my dream to go there.

A civil engineer will take an architects plans and turn a 3-dimensional drawing into a real life structure. They must think of the safety, where it is going to be built, the environment, and what material to use. The structures range from a highway to a 150 story tall skyscraper. The possibilities are endless.

Civil Engineering

Civil engineers are paid an average salary of $89,000,  but an experienced one will make about $122,000 a year. Their median wage is about $42 per hour but experienced ones make about $59. As a result to economic fluctuations, civil engineers are only hired by contract or project-by-project basis. There are five levels of a civil engineer. Each level becomes more difficult and they come with more responsibilities. The higher the education one has, the higher the chance of becoming more successful. Civil engineering requires a bachelor's in civil engineering but a more experienced one would require a master's or a PhD.
