The main character in Kira-Kira is Katie and she is the narrator. Other characters that are in this book are Lynn, she is Katie's sister, Sam, who is Katie's brother, Katie's mom, dad, and Uncle Katsuhisa.

In this picture, Katie is on the right and Lynn is on the left.

Kira-Kira is about a girl, named Katie, that is around 11 to 12 years old. This story takes place around the 20th century. Katie and her family move to an apartment in Georgia from Iowa because her family's supermarket goes out of business. When they did move to Georgia Katie got a new brother named Sam. They are struggling to gain money, so Katie and her older sister Lynn decided to save their money to help their parents. They eventually bought a house, but Lynn was getting really sick. Now Katie's parents have to pay Lynn's medical bills and the mortgage for their house. They are struggling to be able to keep everything they need, including Lynn.

I would recommend you to read this book for many reasons. In the book there are a lot of interesting and descriptive details. It is easy to understand what the author is saying because she can get the min idea of the story across very well.

I think that Cynthia Kadohata's message was that you don't need everything to be happy. Katie's family was struggling to earn enough money and they didn't have a lot, but they made the most of what they did have.
