Comparing and Contrasting
Day 1 - Building Background
CO - Students will be able to build background over the solar system and planets.
LO - Students will be able to write a fact outline in their journal over the video "Exploring Our Solar System" from Free School.
As you enjoy this exploration of the solar system video you will create a fact outline in your journal. The top will be "T=Solar System Video".
Days 2-4 - Picking Planets to Compare and Starting Research
CO - Students will pick two planets to research and begin collecting information.
LO - Students will set up two-column notes in their journal and begin to write down information they learn about their two planets.
Choose one of the following planets to research and set up your journal with "T = Planets Names (The Two Planets Your Comparing and Contrasting)".
Notes will look like the following:
After you have set up your journal use the links below to investigate the planets of your choosing. Remember if you use BrainPop or BrainPop Jr. links the username is mtcarthage and the password is tigers.
Days 4 - 8 Writing Assignment
CO - Students will follow the writing process to compare and contrast two planets in a five paragraph essay.
L.O. Students will write a five paragraph essay comparing and contrasting two planets from within our solar system.
Now that you have researched about your two planets you are going to write a five paragraph compare and contrast essay to show what you learned.
C.O. Students will use a graphic organizer to create and then edit a rough draft.
L.O. Students will write a rough draft using a graphic organizer and then edit it.
Using your T-Chart start a Rough Draft in your journal. The header for the page should be "Planet Compare and Contrast - Rough Draft". Remember to skip lines on your rough draft.
Once your rough draft is finished get a dictionary a start editing your work.
When your editing is done bring your edited rough draft to your teacher to look over.
C.O. Students will create a five paragraph compare and contrast essay using a rough draft.
L.O. Students will write a final copy of their compare and contrast essay using their rough draft and edits to guide their work.
Using your edited rough draft start your final copy. The header for the page should be "Comparing and Contrasting (Planet Name) and (Planet Name)". Remember to NOT skip lines on this copy.
Turn in to your teacher for grading.
