For those of us who are not celebrities, selfies and Instagram can imbue even a normal night with red carpet moments. With that in mind, here are my favorite beauty looks from Oscar night, plus tips you can use to bring out your own star quality!

The carpet wasn’t the only thing red in the house: We saw a beautiful array of red dresses — along with so many red lip shades. A deep lip is where it’s at, and there are lots of beautiful shades to choose from. The best one is the one that’s right on you! Sometimes it takes a little extra time to find the perfect hue, but take a cue from the choices of Chrissy Teigen’s deep, deep berry (similar to NARS Scarlet Empress or M.A.C’s Cyber), Rosamund Pike’s classic lip (try Sonia Kashuk’s Satin Luxe) and Margot Robbie with her blue red lip. Classic red like Nivea’s A Kiss of Cherry and warm reds are all options for different skin tones.

For hair, the looks ranged from just-back-from-the-gym ponytails (Dakota Johnson) to the bombshell bend (Naomi Watts), and parted and polished — both long (Behati Prinsloo and Jenna Dewan-Tatum) and short (Faith Hill). Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray can build body and texture for your own bombshell bend, or use Kerastase Oleo Relax Serum for shimmery hair like Dewan-Tatum. For other short styles, you don’t have shave the sides of your head like Scarlett Johansson or stack your bob like Pike to look modern — a little bit of product can do wonders. I recommend silicone to give you texture and shine like Lupita Nyong’o, or use a little bit of Kevin Murphy Night Rider wax to piece the hair out like Rita Ora.

Yes, ladies, I know we’ve had a blow-up of blow-dry bars in the past few years, but in the case of Nicole Kidman, her blown-out look was met with mixed reviews. Don’t overblow the hair, and take a hint from the red carpet beauties like Watts and Emma Stone. A bend in the hair is the modern way to rock your bob. If you’re longing for long hair or need a body boost to thin or fine hair, I recommend Gold Fever hair extensions, which hit the red carpet for the first time. Celebrities are obsessed with this damage-free process and “better than natural” look and color.

These easy beauty tips will keep you ready for your close-up until the next Academy Awards!
