New York University / Art Director
New York University is my number one choice for my future place of study. This is because I wish to be an art director, in the future. As well as I am an aesthete, in other words I'm very passionate about art. New York University is very well known for its great liberal arts program. I have recently been nominated to assist to a program during the summer to New York University. I'll be able to have hands on projects regarding film and journalism, as well as getting a tour of the campus. This made me very interested in attending New York University.
New York University is one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Not anyone can get accepted. Located in the Greenwich Village, one of the city's most creative and energetic communities, the Village is a historic neighborhood that has attracted generations of writers, musicians, artists, and intellectuals. This University's mission is to be a top quality international center of scholarship, teaching and research. All NYU students and faculty can access an exceptional range of facilities, services, residence halls, and dining locations.
All students interested in applying to study at an NYU Global Academic Center must complete the online application which includes an agreement to the NYU Study Away Standard. All applicants are encouraged to include two different choices of locations for study and every attempt will be made to match students with one of their top two locations.
NYU’s campus is literally without walls, drawing its spirit from a global city with an entrepreneurial bent, a diversity of human life, and resources that include some of the world’s most famous cultural institutions and most valued professional opportunities. On campus, NYU offers countless way to connect with other members of the University community. With over 400 student clubs and organizations, hundreds of sports and residence hall activities, guest lectures and film screenings, and city excursions and community service opportunities, students get involved with the University, with their college, in their residence hall, and most important, with each other.
WHY DO I WANT TO BE AN ART DIRECTOR?
I selected an Art Director as my future career because it contains many of my interests. I'm a perfectionist, meaning I like things done on time and right. That can be very useful when being an art director. You must keep everyone on task and make sure everything looks the way it should. I'm also a person who is very interested in journalism, and photography. Those are things that are especially important when wanting to pursue a career as an art director. Being in this part of the industry could also get me to meet some famous people, and who wouldn't want to meet someone famous?
I think an art director is the perfect choice for me because I get to work as an editor, a journalist and sometimes even a photojournalist. I work with a group of people who are also interested in what I do. That's very good because I'm great at working with other people. I'm also very good at working on my own though, so either way I'm fine. My dream has always been to live and work in New York, that is why I want to study in New York University. Which is a very great thing because New York City is an area with the highest paid work for art directors.
You may be wondering what an art director does exactly. In particular, the art director is in charge of the overall visual appearance and how it communicates visually, stimulates moods, contrasts features, and psychologically appeals to a target audience. Annually the average art director makes about $83,880. Of course that varies depending on which company you work with and how important your project is. The highest-paid work is in the metropolitan areas of New York City, San Francisco and San Jose, California. In order to get a job as an art director you first must receive a bachelor's degree.
INTERVIEWS WITH ACTUAL ART DIRECTORS
(according to Faisal)
Tell me about your job. Is what you do different in any way from what others in your occupation do?
Faisal: "I do the layout for advertisements. I decide where the copy and pictures will go, choose the fonts, styles, and colors, and touch up the pictures if necessary. This involves talking to clients to determine exactly what they want, while obtaining feedback on drafts throughout the process. I work on a freelance basis, so I also have to deal directly with clients. If I worked for a large organization, the creative director would do this. I also have to do my own billing, and I travel to visit clients."
Can you tell me about your background and how you got into this field?
Faisal: "After high school, I studied broadcasting and creative advertising at college. I was attracted to art directing because it involves creativity, problem solving, and freedom. Believe it or not, I also like the stress. I got started by dropping off samples to agencies, informing acquaintances that I was looking for work, and finding my own opportunities. I figured it would be a great way to get me through law school. I ended up loving it and ditching my law school plans."
