Loss In Love

By Caroline and Shakieya

Just A Dream

It was two weeks after the day she turned eighteen
All dressed in white
Going to the church that night
She had his box of letters in the passenger seat
Sixpence in a shoe, something barrowed, something blue
And when the church doors opened up wide
She put her veil down
Trying to hide the tears
Oh she just couldn't believe it
She heard trumpets from the military band
And the flowers fell out of her hand

Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go?
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

The preacher man said let us bow our heads and pray
Lord please lift his soul, and heal this hurt
Then the congregation all stood up and sang the saddest song that she ever heard
Then they handed her a folded up flag
And she held on to all she had left of him
Oh, and what could have been
And then the guns rang one last shot
And it felt like a bullet in her heart( Simile )

Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go?
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream(Metaphor )

Oh,
Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go?
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
Oh, now I'll never know
It's like I'm looking from a distance( Imagery )
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream( Metaphor )

Oh, this is just a dream
Just a dream
Yeah, Yeah

" A Shattered Heart "

Some say a broken heart is like a shattered vase( Simile )

Fragile pieces scattered all over the place.(Rhyme - Place & Vase )

The shattered pieces of broken glass seem to go everywhere

Unlike the pieces of a broken heart that seem to pierce your soul.

With faith and hope you try to mend the broken heart

Unlike the vase it cannot be so easily replaced.

It takes a while to mend it and then you lock it up

You hide the key and wait to see if someone can be found

A special person who will use the key to unlock the heart

A unique person who will handle the heart with gentle hands,

Who can be honest, truthful and handle it with care.

My heart and I wonder is there really that kind of person out there.

Reflections

The reason I thought of this song is because I remembered that it touched me emotionally and I thought it would be good to associate with loss and love. We chose this poem specifically because of the line unlike the vase it cannot be so easily replaced. This relates to the song because in the song it's saying that she lost her husband and she wasn't ready for that because she still loved him which is saying that he can't be replaced much like love in the poem "A Shattered Heart." They are also very different. The song talks about being in love and having to go through a loss and the poem is a comparison between love and a broken vase. Personally the first time I listened to "Just A Dream" by Carrie Underwood I was in tears. This had a more emotional effect on me the the poem. I believe that the poem is an accurate comparison. It can go both ways. In the poem it can mean losing somebody both just in a relationship of losing them forever however, in the song it talks about losing a loved one for good.

I chose this title " Loss in Love " because both the poem and the song are relating to love . They both relate to love because as in the poem the writer seems to have lost someone that he/she really loved , they seem to have never thought that they would lose someone so quickly . Although the person is gone they now know that they cannot be easy replaced because everyone is one of a kind. In the song " Just A Dream " the singer mainly pinpoints out that she also never thought she would lose someone accept she is losing this person for a lifetime . Both poem and the song is relating to " Loss in Love " neither the poet nor the singer knows what to do without the one that have lost because they never really thought it would happen to them , now they see how lonely it can be if the people you love are not around.
