Early Life!

  • Born January 15th, 1926
  • Born as Michael King. His father changed Michael's name to Martin Luther in honor of a German reformer
  • Middle child between older sister and younger brother
  • Sang with church choir at premiere of Gone With the Wind
  • Skeptic of Christianity at early age. Denied Jesus was resurrected
  • Even though he thought some parts of Christianity were untrue, he based his life around teachings in the Bible

  • Led Montgomery Bus Boycott in March 1955
  • King was arrested during this campaign
  • Contributing factor in desegregating the United States

  • Awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1964
  • Remembered each year on MLK day, a federal holiday since 1986
  • Assassinated on April 4th, 1968 by James Earl Ray
  • Just days after his assassination, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968
  • Wife followed in his footsteps, trying to promote his message
