The Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon
By: Jacques-Louis David
The painting is The Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon and was an exponent of neoclassical art. The artist was commissioned by Napoleon to paint this painting which shows the Emperor's coronatipon while also showing its polyical and symbolic message. He painted it as if he was in the ceremony himeslef, which he was. Napolean was crowned emperor by the pope, but ended up crowning himself. The originl sketch of this painting showed Napoleon crowning himself, but the final painting was changed to show him crowning the Empress, which sympolized a nobler, less authoritarrian image of Epmeror Napoleon Bonaparte.
