Soviet Union Nuclear missiles were spotted in Cuba by a U-2 spy plane on October 14, 1962 and they were in range to hit all regions of America So the US discussed different plans for the island. On October 22, 1962 many people wanted to fully invade Cuba but President John F Kennedy proposed that a blockade be set up around the island  to stop any more weapons from coming onto the island and preventing a 3rd world war.

After negotiations with the Soviet Union, they made it very clear that they were not going to back down and the US preparred for an invasion.

THe Soviet Union (as said before) publicly announced that they would never give up and their forces would remain but private negotiations between the US and the USSR/Soviet Union decided that the USSR would remove there missiles from Cuba if the United States would take theirs out of Italy, Turkey and promise to never again attack Cuba.
