Lumbee Indian Tribe
By Thomas Bates
Where They Live and Government
Lumbee Indians are original residents of North Carolina. They are original residents Robeson county especially.Nearly all the Lumbee Indians still live there today. They have their own land in North Carolina that they own.The Lumbee tribe has a good community, but they are not federally recognized.Thas means the Lumbees do not have a reservation or sovereignty rights like other Indian tribes. The Lumbees are governed by tribal council and chairman, but the leadership not official as as far as the United States of America government is concerned.
The picture up there is the Lumber river
This is the Lumber river it runs through the Lumbee land some people think the name of the river means 'Dark Water' kind of creepy. The river is 133 miles (214 km)that is the rivers length. The river is big and the Lumbees fished in the river.
What Lumbees eat
The Lumbee Indians ate many types of food like corn, beans, squash, tobacco, rice, fruits, and for meats they ate turkey, deer, fish, and many more animals. Lumbees are farming people.Originally Lumbee women did most of the farming and the men did the hunting.
Most Lumbees have have wood houses. Most of the houses in the pictures look like modern day house but not as fancy. The Lumbee tribe has a housing program, the program helps families that need help. The Lumbee tribe is using federal funds, to build 50 homes in a Pembroke subdivision to rent to families that need some assistance with there houses. Six homes are almost complete, and tribe leaders say they expect the rest to be complete by the end of the year.
Lumbees used the weapons for hunting food for there people, and family's.So in the picture above the first weapon is a knife with a wood handle and a stone or iron blade. Then we have a knife case that is where you put the knife when it is not being used. After that there is a iron knife of some sort,it could have been used for chipping at rock.So Ill just rap this up with they uses knifes, hammers, axes, weird arrow heads, and more.
Based off of the pictures Ill say I think they have traditional dances, and maybe parades. Some Lumbee have a tradition of having a southern style dress with pinecone patch work with a matching shawl. The pinecone patch work was inspired from a quilt Henery Berry Lowry's daughter made.Activities like parades, a pow wows, pageants, and other cultural events.
