Alice in Wonderland

By: Emery Cowell, Madie Kelly, Connor Tollefsrud

Part 1:

Brief Synopsis:

Alice is sitting by the riverbank with her sister, sees a white rabbit and follows him down a rabbit hole. She enters a topsy turvy world, Wonderland, and nothing is as it appears. She is lost and trying to find her way but she runs into trouble more than once while trying to return home and regain her innocence.

Evident Themes:

-Loss of childhood innocence: Everything isn't always as it appears and everything around you begins to change. The discomfort with one's body during puberty is evident in the constant changes Alice experiences in chapters 1 & 5.

-Going through life can be a puzzle/maze: It takes time to figure out what you want to do with your life and you have to jump over all the obstacles life throws at you.

Key Elements:

-When she falls down the hole: this represents the beginning of her journey. It signifies the spiral she is about to encounter and the unpredictable events that are to come.

-When she meets the queen: This is important because it is foreshadowing the ending of the book. She ultimately has to find a way to deal and defeat the Red Queen. It makes the story more dramatic and mysterious.

-When she fights the queen: This represents Alice finally being okay with who she is and that she needs to make significant changes in her life. She is growing up and trying to find her way in this unpredictable world.

Movie Review: We watched the newest rendition of Alice in Wonderland and it was exciting and visual pleasing. It makes you feel as if you really are in Wonderland. It came across a little more dark and sinister than the book. I don't think kids would want to go to the Wonderland portrayed in the movie even though it takes you on an adventure. Alice's adventures in Wonderland work better as a "hallucination", which is how it shown in the 2010 movie, rather than just being a girl falling into a mystery world.

Part 2:

Our Pitch:

As 19 year old Alice is sitting by the river bank with her sister, she realizes that things aren't always what they seem. She is about to start a new journey at the University of Cambridge and there is a lot of pressure to live up to her family's high expectations. At a luncheon celebrating the high school graduate, Alice meets eyes with a very handsome boy she has never seen. After a fine night of dining and socializing, Alice's life takes a turn for the unexpected and she begins her own journey.

Part 3:

Cast:

Alice: 19 year old girl graduating high school and starting college in the fall. She is excited to start a new chapter in her life but doesn't know if it is exactly what she wants to do. She comes from a very affluent family that holds high expectations for her and Alice wants to make them proud and accepting of her.

Her mom (Red Queen): We chose Julianne Moore (not just because of her red hair) because she has a motherly demeanor to her that gives off stern, yet caring vibes. She would portray Alice's mother who wants nothing but the best for her daughter but often forgets what Alice may want in the long run. In the movie, she would be the mother who wants to make sure that everyone around them knows what is going on with Alice and try to impress all her friends and family with accomplishments.

Sofie, Best Friend (White Queen): Alice's best friend. She has known Alice since they were little. Sophie is her rock and her encouragement to do all the things she has ever wanted to do. We picked Blake Lively because she has a soft, friendly side but also a get stern side that has only good intentions to motivate.

Boyfriend (white rabbit): Graham leads Alice into a "new world" and shows her things that she didn't know existed even though they were so close to her. He makes her realize that things aren't what they used to be and you don't have to do what someone says just to make others happy. Graham allows her to follow a new path and lead her to a new journey.

Boyfriend's best friend (Mad hatter): We chose Miles because he has a crazy side and a down to earth side that would balance out Alice and Graham. He shows them what things are like outside of the norm and how to really follow your own dreams and goals without relying on others to influence you.

Part 4:

Setting: The setting of the movie will take place Cambridge, England as Alice begins an unusual journey to college. It will mostly take place during the fall, in which Alice will follow her new boyfriend, the white rabbit (Josh Hutcherson), to college at Cambridge University. This story takes you on the crazy adventure of a young girl, going through the obstacles of growing up, but along the way she will have her eccentric new friends to guide her to success.

Costumes: This story  is based on modern day England and the style of young adults. Alice is a laid back young lady that grew up in a wealthy household. She prefers sneakers with a comfortable t-shirt and jeans for her everyday life. Her boyfriend, the white rabbit (Josh Hutcherson), has the same style as he wears slouchy clothes due to his parents lack of money growing up. Alice's mother, the red queen (Julianne Moore), prefers to always look presentable as she has many people to impress in her neighborhood. Her best friend, the white queen (Blake Lively), always has Alice's best interest in mind but chooses to dress like a lady as her mother raised her. The best friend of Alice's boyfriend, the mad hatter (Miles Teller), is a wild card and chooses to wear nearly anything he sees fit for the day. Overall, the costumes are based off of present day clothing in England.

Music:

Music selection 1: Alice falls in the whole (Meeting her new boyfriend and beginning her new life)

Music selection 2: Meeting the Queen (Telling her mom she wants to follow her boyfriend and go to college)

Music Selection 3: Defeating the Queen (Going on her own path)

I like the cast! I like that y'all introduced a boy for the cause of her changing life instead of a rabbit hole.
