Handheld Revolution - The Nintendo Gameboy
After the video game crash of 1983, Nintendo introduced the home gaming system known as the Nintendo Entertainment System, which many claim single-handedly ended the crash. In 1989, Nintendo continued on the path of innovation with the Nintendo Game Boy, which gave people the power to play video games on the go. This device opened the door for the handheld market to flourish, eventually leading to such devices as the Nintendo DS and the Playstation Portable. I believe that without the creation of the Game Boy, which was an icon of the 90s, people of today wouldn't have iPhone games or smart phones, which are staples of the modern day.
The Game Boy was a major part of my childhood, especially with massive hits like Pokemon, which eventually became one of the most recognizable franchises in the world. With each new re-visioning of the Game Boy, Nintendo pushes the envelope of what handheld systems can do. With the introduction of backlighting, wireless interconnectivity, touch screen interactivity, and so on, Nintendo has brought millions of people enjoyment through their innovation, which stemmed from the original Game Boy.
