Nightmare Disorder

Myth: All nightmares are just a normal human experience.

What is nightmare disorder?: Waking up from a deep sleep with extremely scary dreams. These include threats to self-esteem, survival, and security.

What can this cause?: It can cause a great amount of distress, or impairment on social life and everyday tasks. The nightmares do not only effect you when you're sleeping, but also when you are awake.

Why this occurs?: There are many causes of nightmare disorder. They include trauma, stress, substance abuse, lack of sleep, and medications.

How can it be treated?: First the patient will be tested using sleep studies. Then with the results treatment will be given according to the severity the dreams. Dreams having to do with stress and anxiety will be treated with counseling. If the cause of the dreams is mental health condition, the treatment will be aimed towards that condition. Medication is rarely used to treat this disorder.
