Eugene Atget (1857-1927)
By Caroline Beaty
Only after failing to become a successful actor and painter, did Atget decide to become a photographer.
Many of his images were purchased by the Historical Library of Paris because of their important documentary history of the city. After two wars, many of Paris' historical streets and buildings had been lost, with only the pictures of Atget to remember them by.
Eugene was never exhibited in his life and died virtually unknown.
Most of his photos were first published by Berenice Abbott after his death.
