@ethanshin1 10,00 powerful men with advanced weaponry can be stopped by the Athenians because of our clever leaders and strategy. Proof = the Persian War.

Not only the rich women in Athens where educated. Peasants that worked around the house often became tutors for the children for they where very knowledgable. And that proves that Athenian Women that are poor can have knowledge ( don't say you treat your peasants badly cause you do to, have them working around the house. ) @NeilD

No, we had the mighty power on the inside. Just because we might seem small ( not literarily, personality wise ) we are big. You don't need a big army and to be " tough " to win a war! @ethanshin1. Warfare isn't everything. You may have great warfare, but we have a culture that is rememberd as kind people, not cold blooded baby killers. You went no where with your knowledge it was just there useless. You guys abused the privilege of the power of knowledge. Before the Persians attcacjed directly at Athens the Athenian held of twice as many Persians WITHOUT the Spartans ( prof that warefare isn't everything. ) We will fight with glory for Athens.

@ethanshin1 True, Sparta did try and stall the Persians, but Athens truly won the war. Outnumbered 2:1, the Athenains defeated the world's largest empire, Persia, without Sparta's help. They were able to adapt quickly to the Persian leader's plan. Athens didn't even have an standing army, but they still defeated the Persian army. Athens killed 7,000 Persian soldiers and Persia only killed about 150 Greek soldiers. The Spartans came afterwords amazed that Athens had won the war. The Spartans were devastated that they didn't get to fight in a war like that.

Athens is better than Sparta for a few reasons. 1. Athens did not kill babies just because they looked "weak". Who is to say that they are nothing and that they don't have potential to become the next leader of Athens. It sounds to me like the Spartans where like the nazis who wanted a pure race, not so great. 2. Athens cared more about education. Where there any Spartans who bothered to write their history down...NO! It was Plutarch who did, and he wasn't even a Spartan! He was a greek historian. And they actually knew how to read and write, as opposed to the Spartans who taught their citizens P.E., stealing, and killing techniques. Ideas are better than armies, knowledge is power!
My third reason is because Athens actually attempted to have an open market like the ones we have in the U.S. today! Look, Spartans told their citizens that they weren't allowed to trade! Talk about terrible economic growth, and isolationism!

Sparta's government had gold/ money. Lots of it. They wouldn't let anyone touch it and would never use it. It was money there to waste. Actually it was VERY ingenious of them to not trade. No trade = less food. I did some research and it said that Sparta because of no markets had a lack of food. This caused problems for Sparta. If we today didn't have any markets our economy would fail. Rome's economy fell because of no markets and so did most of the Ancient worlds Econemy, INCLUDING SPARTA! When you come home after a long day of spartan training, your hungry and need to be treated. Because of no markets these shoulders became weak and sick. ( most of the population where solders. That is a lot of people being sick) This damaged your society and caused it to all go down into peices. Your " genius " idea of not trading caused Sparta to go off the map.

Even though the women in Sparta had more freedom than the women in Athens, there is good reasoning behind it. When the slaves in Sparta where revolting Sparta was forced to up the anti and strengthen their army. The only reason the women in Sparta have more rights is because of the men training. If the men are gone who is going to do all the work. Nothing but the women are left. If the peasants/ slaves never revolted the women in your city- state would still be cleaning, cooking, and sewing because the men would be able to do the work just like Athens. So don't try and say we don't give enough rights to our women. @Liam_G
