Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison Kansas, on July 24th, 1897.                                                                  

Amelia saw her first airplane when she was eleven years old, at the state fair 1908.  She rode in a plane the first until 1920 when her dad took her to an air show near Los Angeles.        

Amelia took her first flying lesson with instructor Neta Snook at Kinner Airfield, January 3, 1921. Amelia had taken flying lesson for two and a half hours when she decedied that life would not be complete unless she ownded her own plane. With mney borrowed from her mother, father, sister, and from working at the telephone company she bought her first plane.

In 1928 Amelia became the first woman to fly across the atlantic ocean. Scince she didnt fly the plane herself she later said,it was a grand experiance, and she felt like baggage.

On Febuary 7th,1931, Amelia married George Putnam.  In the past she had turnded down another proposal, saying she didnt want to be a "domestic robot".

In 1932 Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly alone across the Atlanbtic Ocean.  Following her solo flight, President Hoover, called her a "pioneer" and presented her with a gold medal.In 1935 Amelia became the first person to fly alone from Hawaii to California, and later that year she became the first person to fly from Los Angeles to Mexico City.

On June 1, 1937 Amelia Earhart and her navagator, Fred Noonan began their flight around the world. The flight took them to South America, Africa, India, Burma, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, and New Guinea.

Earhart and Noonan left New Guinea on July 2, 1937, headed for a tiny island in the Pacific ony two miles long and one mile wide.  They never arrived.  Amelia Earhart disapearedin the Pacific on July 3, just 21 days before her 40th birthday.  Knowing the dangers of the flight Amelia said, "If I should pop off, it will be doing the thing I've always wanted to do."
