"Must Knows" of the Week!

New Interactive Technology Tip

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools teachers in Bond Phase 1 & 2 Schools: We have discovered that there is an issue with Google Chrome when used with your new interactive technology. If you have the chrome browser open, and switch into PC/Interactive mode, you WILL NOT be able to interact with the web page you are on. The work-around is this: First close out of the browser window, then re-open the browser and go back to the site you were originally on. This problem is especially apparent when using chrome with an interactive website/lesson. However, just closing the browser, and re-opening it solves the issue 100%.

Read & Write for Google- Chrome Extension

Read&Write for Google Chrome™ is a Chrome extension that offers a range of powerful support tools to help students gain confidence with reading, writing, studying and research. The premium version is available to all Walled Lake Consolidated Schools teachers and students in grades 3 and up. The district has pre-installed the extension. Users will be prompted to authorize it, then it is ready to go. Remember to use Chrome and then the toolbar will appear whenever a Google Document is open. Look for a purple puzzle piece at the top of the screen; click it to expand the menu.

Using a tool like Read & Write for Google can provide learning support to all (this is called a "universal support."  An important benefit is that it will help students become familiar with similar type tools that are available when taking online standardized tests. Teachers, please show your students so that they can see what it does; then they can use it when they need it on a daily basis. They decide if they need it and they decide on which tools they want to use based on their own learning needs. Features include:

  • text-to-speech: Hear words, passages, or whole documents read aloud with easy-to-follow dual color highlighting
  • "See" the meaning of words explained with text and picture dictionaries
  • Word prediction: get suggestions for the current or next word as you type
  • Voice to speech: turn words into text as you speak
  • Highlight text in documents or the web and collect for use in other documents
  • Create vocabulary lists complete with definitions and images
