If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
By: Laura Numeroff
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is about a mouse who happens to show up at a young boy's house so he offers him a cookie. The little mouse takes the cookie.... but it doesn't stop there.
Implication No. 1
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is a story about a mouse who uses a little boy to get everything he wants. The mouse first wants a cookie, then a glass of milk, then a straw, then a napkin, then he wants to look in the mirror for a milk mustache, and then he realizes he needs a trim. So he asks for scissors.
One of the implications I found is that greedy people never stop asking for something because nothing's ever enough for them.
"... When he's done, he'll probably want to take a nap. You'll have to fix up a box for him with a blanket and a pillow. He'll crawl in, make himself comfortable, and fluff the pillow a few times. He'll probably ask you to read him a story..." Middle of story
The mouse keeps asking the little boy for more and more and more and never stops because he always wants to do something else or get something more. He's one of those people (or animals) that just want and want like nothing's ever enough.
Implication No. 2
The young boy in If You Give a Mouse a Cookie has to give this greedy mouse whatever it wants. The boy has to run around the house trying to find everything and has to clean up behind the mouse. He probably gets tired of hosting this mouse.
Another implication I found was that people who give often keep giving, and it's easy for them to be taken advantage of.
"... When the picture is finished, he'll want to sign his name... with a pen. Then he'll want to hang his picture on your refrigerator. Which means he'll need scotch tape. He'll hang up his drawing and stand back to look at it. Looking at the refrigerator will remind him that... he's thirsty. So... he'll ask for a glass of milk. And chances are if he asks for a glass of milk, he's gonna want a cookie to go with it." Ending paragraph of story
The boy wants to please the mouse so whenever he asks for something, he gives him just that. Because of this, the mouse asks for more because he knows that the boy will give it to him. This is why when you are a giving person you can easily be taken advantage of.
