The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri into the union as a slave state and Maine as a free state. A line was also drawn at 36,30. This line would determine whether incoming states would be free or slave states based on their location relative to 36,30.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President on November 6th, 1860. This upset many southerns, especially since he didn't show up on most of their ballots. Lincoln's election led to the secession of the confederate states and ultimately the Civil War.
