Marist High School Phenology Project

Claire Kelly

Phenology is the study of the timing of things that happen in the environment. For this project, the Honors Environmental Science class at Marist High School is working with the USA National Phenology Network and observing trees and their patterns and the affect the environment has on these patterns. I will be observing a Silver Maple tree.

This is the Silver Maple on September 17, 2014. There are many leaves, but only less then 5% are colored. One leaf bundle has red leaves.

This is the Silver Maple tree on September 19, 2014. Only one leaf bundle is colored, less then 5% of the leaves on the tree.

This is the Silver Maple tree on September 22, 2014. Less then 5% of the leaves on the tree are colored, but leaves have started to fall, less then 5% of them.

This is the Silver Maple tree on September 24, 2014. Less then 5% of the leaves have fallen and less then 5% of the leaves have changed color, yet more have then last time.

This is my tree on September 26, 2014. It has many leaves, and less then 5% are changing color and have fallen.

This is the Silver Maple on September 30, 2014. No more leaves have fallen or changed color, so less then 5% have had any change.

This is my tree on October 1, 2014. Less then 5% of the leaves have fallen, and less then 5% of the leaves have changed color.

This is the Silver Maple tree on October 2, 2014. No noticeable changes have occurred since the last observation.

This is the Silver Maple on October 7. It is very slowly beginning to change color and lose its leaves.

This is my tree on October 8. Today, I observed a squirrel sitting in my tree, which is changing color slowly.

This is the Silver Maple on October 9. Nothing has really changed. The tree still has many green leaves on it, yet some have changed color and fallen.

This is my tree on October 10. Nothing has changed since the last observation.

This the Silver Maple on October 14. Note the newest addition to the tree tied around the trunk, its awesome new tree tag!

This is my tree on October 15. Less then 5% of the leaves have changed color and fallen.

This is the Silver Maple on October 16. More leaves have began to change color.

This is the tree on October 22. It has still not changed color in many of the leaves and it still has most of its leaves on the tree.

This is my tree on October 23. There are observers learning about the Silver Maple, thanks to the tree tag we made. Yay for tree tags!

This is my tree on October 28. More leaves are changing color and falling.

On October 29, the Silver Maple tree has lost more leaves, yet they are still not changing color.

On October 30, my tree still has green leaves that have not yet fallen.
