Work experience  

Copy editor/page designer. The Quad-City Times, Davenport, Iowa, 2005-current: Responsible for editing stories for a daily newspaper, designing pages and publications, producing news videos for the company’s web site, updating and maintaining the company’s news web site and supervising news staff.  

Associate editor. The Clinton Herald, Clinton, Iowa, 1999-2004: Helped redesign a daily newspaper and introduced new features that increased paid circulation. Responsibilities included supervising and training staff, editing stories, writing news stories and helping design the company’s first web site.  

Reporter. The Washington Evening Journal, Washington, Iowa, 1997-1999. Wrote stories on local government and many other issues, took photographs, designed pages and special issues and helped design the company’s first web site.  

Writer/editor. Roberson Marketing, West Des Moines, Iowa, 1994-1996. Wrote and edited material for clients’ advertising publications, including “Farm Profit” magazine, a Massey-Ferguson publication. Duties also included interacting with clients and customers.  

Editor,  The Monticello Express, Monticello, Iowa, 1992-1994: Supervised staff and performed all jobs in the production of a community newspaper. Duties included writing and editing stories, taking photographs, designing publications and creating new advertisement revenue.  

Reporter/editor. The Commercial Review, Portland, Ind., 1988-1990: Wrote stories and took photographs for the company’s daily newspaper. Responsibilities also included managing the company’s weekly newspaper.  

Public affairs specialist. U.S. Army, Fort Knox, Ky., Heidelberg, Germany, 1980-1984: Wrote and edited stories for U.S. Army publications. Received an honorable discharge after tour of duty.


The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, 1990-1992. Received Master of Arts degree in communications studies – media studies. Grade-point average: 3.72.

Marycrest College, Davenport, Iowa, 1984-1988. Received Bachelor of Arts degree in print media communications and minored in history. Grade-point average: 3.79.    

Related activities  

Researcher. Rock Island Arsenal Museum, Rock Island Arsenal. Ill., 1985-1988: Researched the history of museum artifacts for museum records, assisted with restoration of artifacts and gave tours to the public. This was a student internship position.  

Editorial assistance.  John Deere and Company, Moline, Ill., 1988: Responsible for writing stories John Deere publications, conducting readership surveys and redesigned a company publication. This was a student internship position.   Newspaper page paste-up clerk. The Quad-City Times, Davenport, Iowa, 1988: ·        Worked part-time job in the composition room of a daily newspaper.    


More than 30 awards for newspaper writing, photography, publication design and general excellence. Some of these awards include: first-place award from the Iowa Newspaper Association for coverage of a tornado that hit Washington, Iowa; first-place award for newspaper column writing; first-place award for newspaper page design.
