Identity Theft Prevention
Protect your personal information. Protect your computer. A strong and regularly updated firewall, anti-virus program and anti-spyware program will provide most of the protection an individual needs.
Strengthen your digital security. Choose good passwords and PINS. Do not choose passwords that could be guessed easily by anyone. Do not use the same password for everything. Do not store all of your passwords on a computer.
Be careful when shopping online. Make sure the site is legitimate. Keep a separate credit card just for online purchases. Don not store any information on a store's website.
Stay alert when you type in your PIN number at a store. There could be someone behind your shoulder watching your moves. Block others' view of the monitor when putting in your PIN number.
Watch what you carry. People usually carry lots of personal information in their purse or wallet. If it gets stolen, it is easy for someone else to use that information. Also, carry your purse or wallet safely.
