The IB Design Cycle

The IB Design Cycle is a four step plan that allow someone to think about there problem and find a solution to that problem.

A Inquiring and analyzing

i. explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a specified client/target audience

Example:My car won’t start and I have to work and take the kids to school. I will be late for work and the kids will be late or miss school

ii. identify and prioritize the primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution to the problem

Example:You lift the hood and check the car yourself. Check internet to find out how to fix it. Call a mechanic

iii. Analyse a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the problem

Example:Call a taxi. Get a ride with a friend. Call a tow truck. Triple AAA. Get it jumpstarted. Ask for a loan.

iv. develop a detailed design brief which summarizes the analysis of relevant research.

Example:I called a mechanic and they towed the car to their shop they told me it was the engine and it would cost 2500$ to get a new engine so I decided to fix it.

Developing ideas

i. develop a design specification which clearly states the success criteria for the design of a solution

Example:Need to find means of transportation. Needs to have A.C. Doesn’t need to be convertible.

ii. develop a range of feasible design ideas which can be correctly interpreted by others

Example:A rental car. Taxi, call a friend, Bus, Bike , Walk , Borrow Car .

iii. present the final chosen design and justify its selection

Example:Bus because you can take your kids closer to school then I can walk them there. Also I can walk back to the bus and go to work

iv. develop accurate and detailed planning drawings/diagrams and outline the requirements for the creation of the chosen solution.

Example:-Get it towed

              -Get it repaired

              -Get an estimate

Creating the solution

i. construct a logical plan, which describes the efficient use of time and resources, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create the solution

Example:-Call tow company/5 min/me

-Wait for tow company/30 min/me

-Car arrives at mechanic/tow company

-Diagnose/mechanic/30 min

-Determine problem and cost/mechanic

-Decide if it is reasonable to repair and have it fixed. 10 min/me

-Decided to fix car, they fix the car, I pay

ii. demonstrate excellent technical skills when making the solution

Example:Doing excellent research on car

Pick good mechanic

Pay the right amount of money

iii. follow the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended

Example:I change the plan I must write it If out

iv. fully justify changes made to the chosen design and plan when making the solution

Example:Documenting solution and presenting your solution

v. present the solution as a whole, either: a. in electronic form, or

b. through photographs of the solution from different angles, showing details.

Evaluating

i. design detailed and relevant testing methods, which generate data, to measure the success of the solution

Example:Drive the car around and check if there are any problems

ii. critically evaluate the success of the solution against the design specification

Example:Start driving it around

Get the ok from mechanic

iii. explain how the solution could be improved

Example:Have info of your mechanic on your phone and check it regularly

iv. explain the impact of the solution on the client/target audience.

Example:You can take your kids to school now and I can also drive myself to work
